Interview with Shelley Jackson
by James Roland
We met Shelley at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books – she stepped into a last-minute author panel to take the place of Kelly Link (a virus had left her grounded on the East coast).
Instead of mumbling her way though a mess of unprepared thoughts, Shelley was well spoken and thoughtful. Her artistic passions have no apparent boundaries; Shelley can’t think outside the box because she doesn’t believe in the existence of boxes. But despite her Berkley upbringing, critical acclaim, and pension for the eerie and twisted, she escapes the labels of “hipster” or “emo” by sheer talent (not to mention honesty, charm, and intelligence).
