Feeling Merry

At its best, a video ad is just an excuse to make a great short film. And it does everything a short film should do. It tells us a story. It creates new friends for us to cheer. It touches our hearts. This Christmas season has inspired the 150-year-old British department store John Lewis to achieve exactly that.

The big boys in Hollywood could take some notes from the two-year-old advertising powerhouse, Adam & Eve, London, who made the ad. In their short tenure, the young-but-experienced folks at Adam & Eve have plied their talents to capture the hearts of the Britons, not to mention to steal major campaigns from the likes of M&C Saatchi.

But perhaps best of all, this little gem introduced us to Ellie Goulding, another fresh-minted superstar in Albion. The 23-year-old’s hauntingly vulnerable and lyrical vocals were voted the “Sound of 2010” in the UK, made her the Critics’ Choice at the 2010 BRIT Awards, and — perhaps most importantly — melted our hearts half a globe away at RedFence headquarters. All while technically still on vacation from her studies in drama at the University of Kent. Not bad for a little gap year project. Most kids just get drunk and contract social diseases in Thailand.

Goulding produced this particular cover with help from Ben Lovett, of Mumford and Sons, and it hit number two on the UK singles chart just last week. We liked it so much, we’re including the original music video:
