The Editor’s pick of videos by some awfully talented people.
Blood Red Skies
We don’t know much about Galanis, yet. But we’re sure to find out. RF ran across them at our beloved Jameson Brown coffee shop in Pasadena, and we liked them a lot.
The sound they have dubbed ‘dark country/folk/rock’ caught at the pirates and wenches in our respective hearts. It manages a fine balance between the epic power of orchestral instrumentation and the plainspoken passion of folk vocals. The result took hold of our emotions and dragged us away with the promise of peril, high seas, and unimagined ports. No cafe background music here, fellas. This is the main event.
Then, when we saw the simple power of creativity, metaphor, and storytelling in this video, our talent crush began to blossom into something more. We knew we had stumbled upon the genuine article. As the saying goes, “Whatever ‘it’ is, they’ve got it.” And that’s what we’re all about.
According to the band’s homepage, the group owes its genesis to an unidentified gospel choir and orchestra tour:
GALANIS began as a recording experiment. With borrowed equipment and a makeshift studio in an east [sic] LA apartment, violist Amy Noonan and vocalist Bridget Schack added harmony and string instrumentation to [Zachary Robert] Galanis’ eclectic set of folk songs. These recordings would later appear on the Analogue EP. While touring with the gospel choir and orchestra later that year, the trio recruited piano savant Derek Purdy and percussionist Jordan Vena to join the band.
Last autumn, the group wandered the western U.S. playing in living rooms and coffee shops. Their upcoming performances have not been released, but be sure we’ll get to as many as possible.
And Galanis, if you’re reading this, let’s do lunch.
