Bound for Glory
Our first-ever film trailer at Movie of the Moment features a documentary following the Railroad Revival Tour (the subject of our Winter 2012 Issue at RedFence). Big Easy Express promises a simultaneously raucous and intimate look at the six-city tour that took Mumford & Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros across America on a pair of vintage train cars. Everything about the tour smacks of magic, and it seems the film director, Emmett Malloy, has mainlined that energy into his film.
Malloy and his brother, Brendan, have previously fashioned music videos for an array of artists from Wolfmother and Ben Folds to The White Stripes and Blink-182, as well as commercials for ESPN, Nike, and Coca-Cola. Their documentary efforts include a number of celebrated movies about surfing, as well as behind-the-scenes work with their musical contacts. Emmett Malloy also co-founded Brushfire Records with his cousin, pro-surfer Chris Malloy, and musician Jack Johnson. He recently completed an HBO series about boxer Freddie Roach.
The premiere of Big Easy Express will be the closing film at this year’s South-by-Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference & Festival in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, March 17, 2012. The most low-key of the big league film festivals, SXSW specializes in emerging trends and talents and a “crash course on guerilla filmmaking and marketing” (sxsw.com).
At the closing-night premiere of Big Easy Express, members of Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show will join director Emmett Malloy and producers Tim Lynch, Mike Luba, and Bryan Ling for an audience question-answer session and then a special acoustic set.
