Han, Indy, Deckard . . . Harrison
Harrison Ford has been easy to love on-screen in the decades since he piloted the Millennium Falcon into cinematic history. Interviewing him, on the other hand, is not so easy.
It may be that both trends rise from his unflappable confidence, born of a depth of experience that goes beyond “I did that once in a movie” to simply “I can do that.” After all, he famously launched his acting career by giving up on acting and working as a carpenter. Since then, among other skills, he has become a consummate horseman and a certified pilot of a number of terrestrial craft, including a helicopter and a de Havilland DHC2 Beaver. That kind of real-life experience gives depth far beyond a pretty face, and perhaps curtails one’s patience for late night talk shows and red carpet caterwauls.
Or maybe he just never did an interview sober.
In any case, this set of short interview clips stands out as the exception. Speaking with Jon Favreau, the director of Ford’s latest film, Cowboys and Aliens, the actor seems to be having a genuinely good time. He is clear-eyed, engaged, and giving fans what every good interviewer hopes to reveal — a peek at the likable, real guy who created all those characters we love.
(Disclaimer: Technically, these clips are publicity for Cowboys and Aliens. That’s not our usual fair, but I liked Ford in the movie, and I really like him in these clips. So, I’m making an exception.)
