Christmas Wish
by Rachel Fox

Feathery snow glistens on the roof,
Soft breath remains misty in arctic air.
Hundreds of red and green lights show proof
Of spirit, festive cheer laid bare.

The dazzling fire warms the large room
Cookies, chocolate chip, are laid to rest on plate
With glass of milk, beginning to sour all too soon.
The brilliant tree sheds his precious green weight.

Carolers’ voices float on spiced cidered wind
As each in their bed, covers to chin.
Morpheus spins enchanting visions that bind
All ‘cept one, who jolts awake from dreams within.

Glancing side to side, everything is in place
Moonlight enters through the gaping window.
Daddy’s snore faintly heard with trace
Of the grandfather clock ticking, to which all bow.

Peace not near, a foot appears to test the floor.
Ten little toes bashfully leave the warm bed.
Shuffled steps make their way slowly to door,
Tiny hand, shaking, grabs her dolly by the head.

The evergreen tree looms with inviting presence
Decorated with strings of lights and shiny balls.
A graceful angel rest at top, with a smile dense
But tempts the child, under the spell she falls.

One red ball beckons more than the rest,
It catches the Christmas lights and frees
Reflecting the room in detail. Two eyes, a guest
Unwelcomed, flickers within, a chilling breeze

Sends a thrill, goosebumps prick her skin.
To the tree, warm to sight, she turns;
One look, her gaze remains fixed upon
Two eyes, hellish fire erupts–no more she sees.

Weary snow runs away, not to be seen;
Once pleasant chill, now foreboding air.
Windows, cold and dark, freezes sun beams
Yet, ribbon of sunlight enters the now mournful lair.
