It Makes Me Feel Like Dancing
by Jane McCurley
What do you get when you take old jazz melodies, some classical and Latin melodies, and the occasional Asian melody and shake them all together? Pink Martini! This great group has kept people’s feet and hips a-movin’ since their debut album ‘Sympathetique’ in 1997.
I discovered Pink Martini two years ago through my dad. My first Pink Martini concert was at a small hotel in Sand Diego; my next concert would be at The Wiltern near my home in L.A. But this year, three albums later, it seemed as if they had arrived. This fun-loving group played three nights at the Hollywood Bowl as the closer to its summer season. Oh, did I mention that every night was sold out; my husband kindly bought us tickets nine months beforehand, and at that point more than half of the tickets for each night were sold out.
Anyone who really knows me at all, knows how much I love this group. And everyone that I share their music with falls in love with it as I have; it is infectious!! But what really makes them so great? For me, it is their unique, hip, and fun-loving take on classical and jazz themes. But don’t take my word for it, you don’t even have to take the word of the thousands of people who sold out the Bowl all three nights. You can hear them for yourselves; clips of all the songs on their albums are available through their website- www.pinkmartini.com
