Boston Attacks!
by James Roland

While Stumbling I conceived a new blog idea: find a slew of brand new college-aged artists and write about them before they hit it big.

I found a great Jazz singer and a YouTube comedian, then remembered a troupe of young filmmakers I’d found a while back and suddenly I had a solid three to form my blog around.

And then I realized: completely by chance, they all hailed from Emerson College in Massachusetts.

In the words of random internet cartoons, “WTF, mate?

Is Boston the internet culture epicenter? Does Emerson offer courses in Youtubology? Are college-aged artists worth a wide internet audience?

Well watch and decide for yourself.

Simple Coat

The grass-roots film making duo of Will Hoffman and Derek Paul Boyle, both studying at Emerson College. Their flicks are usually charming, madcap farces with strong plots and clever cinematography. Will and Derek have four short films in their arsenal, including Goodnight Jolene, which they filmed in Prague, and Why the Gown, which premiered at the Rhode Island International Film Festival.

Camille Harris

Singer/songwriter Camille hails from Boulder, but studies in Boston and devotes her music to the art of silly. Her focus is fun but her vocals carry the gravitas of dust-bowl beaten jazz singers from 1937.

Her tracks Muffin Man and Chopsticks Duet are particularly ridiculous, while Among the Trees and Lullaby reveal a quieter, soulful range to her work.

Max Goldberg

A Jewish stand-up comedian might not seem newsworthy, but when he comes from Los Angeles and his internet video F*ck Planet Earth (with an asterisk for our family audience) is quickly approaching one million views, it’s time to take note.

Max’s video, although as profane as the title indicates, stands out from its YouTube peers because – wonder of wonders – it’s funny and clever. And his video diaries are as swift and smart as the best of Brotherhood 2.0.
